Answer: Ballistic Missile is a self-guided strategic weapon system that follows a parabolic trajectory to deliver a payload from its launch site to a predetermined target.

  • The development of Ballistic Missiles in India was started under Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). However, development of the ‘Agni’ series of Ballistic Missile started from 1989.
  • ‘Agni’ series of Ballistic Missiles are medium to intercontinental range surface to surface nuclear capable missiles. For instance, Agni-1 is a short range missile; Agni-2 is a medium range missile and Agni-3 is an intermediate range missile.
