Rise in Population of Asiatic Lions

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in its report criticized the lack of creation of newly protected habitat for Asiatic lions in Gujarat. The population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat increased from 205 in 1979 to 523 in 2015.

Project Lion

With habitat loss and increase in the number of lions, the Gujarat government has planned to start Project Lion, which aims at protecting the lions, especially those that stray out of protected areas.

The Project aims at preserving corridors, eco-sensitive zones and lions moving out of the protected areas.
