About the Plant

  • Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) is a shrub that used to grow abundantly in the Shola grasslands of the Western Ghats.
  • The flower is special to the Western Ghats, especially the Nilgiris, and has a 12-year flowering cycle. The last major bloom was in 2006. The Nilgiri Hills, which literally means the blue mountains is said to derive its name from the purplish blue flowers.

Habitat

Kurinji once used to cover the Anamalai Hills, Cardamom Hills,Nilgiri Hills, Palani Hills and Bababudangiri like a carpet during its flowering season. Now ....
