Gupta Period (319 CE - 540 CE)
The Gupta empire was founded by Srigupta and the period lasted for more than 300 years (4th – 6th century CE). Important Gupta emperor includes –
Chandragupta-I
- He was the first independent king with the title ‘Maharajadhiraja’. His empire covered parts of present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Bengal.
- He started the Gupta Era in 319-320 CE.
- Chandragupta-I was succeeded by his son Samudragupta. His accession to throne is mentioned in an inscription at Asoka Pillar (Prayaga prasasti) by Harishena (a court official).
