Educational Status and Reforms
- During the later-half of 18th century and first three decades of the 19th century, the development of education took place only through the traditional institutions. Two noteworthy developments are –
- In 1781, Warren Hastings established a Madarsa in Calcutta to encourage the study of Muslim laws along with Arabic and Persian languages.
- In 1791, Jonathan Duncan established a Sanskrit College to promote the study of Hindu laws and philosophy in Banaras.
