Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover in India, spanning approximately 77,700 sq. km, which constitutes about 25.14% of its total geographical area. The forests are classified into -

  • Very Dense Forests (7%): These areas have over 70% canopy density.
  • Moderately Dense Forests (36%): With 40–70% canopy density, they form a significant part of the state's forest cover.
  • Open Forests (39%): These are less dense forests, with canopy density between 10–40%.

Dominant Forest Types

  • Teak Forests: Covering around 18,332 sq. km, teak is the most dominant species, providing high commercial and ecological value.
