- 10 Aug 2024
On 9th August, 2024, Mizoram and Assam pledged to promote peace along their inter-state border and continue resolving their long-standing boundary dispute following border talks after a 20-month hiatus.
Key Points
- Positive Discussions: Assam’s Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora described the discussions as positive and conducive to resolving the border dispute amicably.
- Commitment to Solutions: Both states reaffirmed their commitment to find amicable solutions and uphold a zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of areca nuts.
- Optimism for Resolution: Mizoram Home Minister expressed hope that the border dispute would be resolved, marking this as the first meeting after the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) assumed power in December last year.
- Historical Context: The dispute originates from colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933, affecting a 164.6-km border shared between Mizoram’s Aizawl, Kolasib, and Mamit districts and Assam’s Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts.
- Cultural Initiatives: It was agreed that joint cultural and sports festivals will be organized by the administrative authorities of border districts before March 31 next year to foster better relations.
