Cabinet Approves Eight New Railway Projects

On 9th August 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved eight new railway projects, aimed at enhancing logistical efficiency and connecting underserved regions.

  • Project Scope: The approved projects will expand the Indian Railways network by 900 km and include the construction of 64 new stations across 14 districts in seven states: Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal.
  • Environmental Benefits: The initiatives are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 767 crore kg, equivalent to planting 30 crore trees.
  • Economic and Logistical Impact: The projects will improve transportation of key commodities such as agricultural products, coal, iron ore, and cement, leading to a capacity increase of 143 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) for freight traffic.
