Overview
- Forests in West Bengal occupy 11,879 sq. km (13.38% of the state's area), with 7,054 sq. km as Reserved Forests, 3,772 sq. km as Protected Forests, and 1,053 sq. km as Unclassed Forests.
- Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts have the highest forest cover, at 75.52% and 45.86% respectively.
- The state is rich in biodiversity, including the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Sundarbans, Indian Rhinoceros, Leopards, and numerous migratory birds in winter.
- The protected areas include 6 National Parks, 16 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 2 Tiger Reserves, 2 Elephant Reserves, 1 Biosphere Reserve, and 5 Conservation Reserves, sheltering species like Indian Bison (Gaur), ....
