Ecology Concepts

  • The word ecology is derived from the Greek word ‘oikos’ meaning habitation and ‘logos ’ meaning study and thus implies the study of the habitations of the organisms.
  • Ecology was first described in 1866 by the German Geologist Ernest Haeckel. He invented the word oeckologie for the relation of the animal to its organic as well as inorganic environment, particularly its friendly or hostile relations to those animals and plants with which it comes into contact.

Levels of organisation in Ecology includes Individual-> Population->Community->Ecosystem->Biome->Biosphere
