  • Biodiversity is the sum of all the different species of animals, plants, fungi and microbial organisms living on Earth and the variety of habitats in which they live.
  • Biodiversity includes three main types: diversity within species (genetic diversity), between species (species diversity) and between ecosystems (ecosystem diversity).
  • India is one of the few countries where forest cover is on the rise and forests are teeming with wildlife. It has only 2.4 % of the geographical area of the world, but harbours nearly 8 % of the globally known floral and faunal species.
