Balance Infrastructure Development & the Fundamental Right to Shelter: SC
On 24th July, 2024, the Supreme Court (SC) urged a balance to be struck between railway infrastructure development at Haldwani (Uttarakhand) and the fundamental right to shelter of nearly 50,000 people accused of illegally living on railway land.
About the Case
- In December 2022, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the removal of encroachments from 29 acres of railway land near the Haldwani Railway Station with the help of paramilitary forces.
- In January 2023, the Supreme Court stayed the order of Uttarakhand High Court.
