Causes
- Geology: Slope instability can be caused by weak or cracked rocks, varyingly strong soil layers, and geological discontinuities.
- Morphology: Because of the gravitational forces acting on the materials, steep slopes, cliffs, and regions with a concave shape are more likely to have landslides.
- Weather and climate factors like snowmelt and heavy rains can saturate the soil, raise pore water pressure, and weaken the cohesiveness of the soil, which can cause a slope to crumble.
- Seismic Activity: By shaking the ground and causing slopes to become unstable, earthquakes and tremors can cause landslides.
