  • Groundwater and Soil Pollution: Due to its identical chemical makeup, plastic, which is intended to last forever, degrades into ever-tinier fragments yet cannot biodegrade. Plastic rots for years when buried in a landfill without being treated. Toxic chemicals from plastics leak out during this process, seep into the groundwater, and then run into lakes and rivers downstream. Plastic seepage contributes to soil pollution and has recently begun to result in the presence of microplastics in the soil.
