Answer: 1967 elections introduced coalitions. Defections had a key part in forming and unmaking governments after the 1967 election.

In the years before the 1964 elections, the country underwent enormous transformations. The Congress government lost popularity in the face of an economic crisis caused by successive failed monsoons, widespread drought, declining agricultural production, serious food shortages, depleted foreign exchange reserves, a drop in industrial production and exports, and a sharp rise in military spending and diversion of resources from planning and economic development. This led to communist and socialist groups fighting for equality.
