Answer: Social capital refers to the institutions, relationships, and norms that shape the quality and quantity of a society’s social interactions. It is ‘social’ as one cannot have it in isolation, unlike human capital and is a- ‘capital’- that consists of the relations one has with other people.The notion of social capital first appeared in the works of Lyda Judson Hanifan but it became widespread by the contributions of Jane Jacobs, Pierre Bourdieu, James S. Coleman and Robert D. Putnam.
