Even before the British established formal dominion in India, trade between India and European countries was common. India and Europe had economic links through Syria, Egypt, and the Oxus valley.

  • In Europe, the 15th century was a time of geographical discoveries of land and sea routes. Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, found America in 1492, while Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer, discovered a new maritime passage from Europe to India in 1498.
