The Portuguese
Even before the British established formal dominion in India, trade between India and European countries was common. India and Europe had economic links through Syria, Egypt, and the Oxus valley.
- In Europe, the 15th century was a time of geographical discoveries of land and sea routes. Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, found America in 1492, while Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer, discovered a new maritime passage from Europe to India in 1498.
