The French
In 1664, Colbert, a minister of Louis XIV, laid the foundations of French East India Company, it was granted 50-year monopoly on French trade in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
- The first French factory was established at Surat by Francois Caron in 1668.
- They occupied Mahe in the Malabar, Yanam in Coromandal (both in 1725) and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu (1739).
- Joseph Dupleix was the governor-general of French possession in India from 1742 to 1754.
