Mountbatten Plan (3 June, 1947)
On 3rd June 1947, the Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, proposed the Mountbatten Plan.
- Mountbatten Plan was to divide India but retain maximum unity. This was done by making concessions to both the Congress and the League.
- Punjab and Bengal would be divided so that the limited Pakistan that emerged would meet both the Congress and League's positions to some extent.
- The League's demand would be accommodated by creating Pakistan, but it would be made as small as possible to accommodate the Congress’s stand on unity.
