As per the recent UNDP report, India halved its poverty in last 10 yrs. In this light explain the factors which led to this drop and also highlight the challenges still existing in India’s poverty landscape.

Answer: Recently a UNDP report highlights that India achieved fastest absolute reduction in the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) value during the period 2005-06 to 2015-16. Poverty during this period climbed down to 27.5% from 55.1 %, indicating that the number of poor people in India fell by more than 271 million within ten years.

The factors which helped in achieving this feat are multidimensional:

  • Rural Housing: PM Awaas Yojana aims at providing free housing to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in rural areas and main targets would be the households of SC/STs.
