UNCCD COP16 – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
In December 2024, 16thConference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) concluded in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with nearly 200 countries committing to prioritise land restoration and drought resilience.
- It was the first-ever UNCCD COP held in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Major Highlights
- Global Drought Framework to be finalized at COP17 (Mongolia, 2026).
- $12.15 billion pledged under Riyadh Drought Resilience Partnership for 80 countries.
- Great Green Wall (GGW): Italy (€11M), Austria (€3.6M) pledged for African restoration.
- Vision for Adapted Crops & Soils (VACS): $70M allocated for resilient food systems.
