"The State of the World’s Mangroves 2024" Report

The State of the World’s Mangroves 2024 Report was released by the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) on World Mangrove Day (July 26, 2024).

  • It provides a satellite-based assessment of global mangrove forests, covering 1.47 lakh sq. km, using 2020 as the baseline.

Key Findings

  • Critically Endangered Mangroves: Found in the Lakshadweep archipelago and Tamil Nadu’s coastal regions due to rising sea levels.
  • Vulnerable Mangroves: Located on the western seaboard (Gujarat to Kerala), facing the threat of collapse.
  • Major Causes of Mangrove Loss (2000-2020): Conversion to aquaculture, oil palm plantations, and rice cultivation (43%).
