Sevdalinka: UNESCO’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage
Sevdalinka, a traditional Bosnian love song, has been recently added to UNESCO’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

- Sevdalinka traces its origins back to the 16th century.
- It emerged in the South Slavic regions, influenced by Ottoman musical traditions.
- The genre blends South Slavic poetry with oriental musical elements, retaining its melancholic and expressive tone through the centuries.
- It serves as a living cultural practice in Bosnia and Herzegovina, performed at family and community gatherings.
