International Big Cat Alliance
The Union Cabinet, in March 2024, approved the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), headquartered in India, to promote global big cat conservation.
Key Highlights
- Initial budget of Rs. 150 crores for five years (2023-24 to 2027-28).
- A multi-country, multi-agency coalition with 96 big cat range countries, conservation organizations, and business groups.
- Focuses on the conservation of seven big cat species – Lion, Tiger, Snow Leopard, Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
- Aligns biodiversity policies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for inclusive conservation.
- Officially launched in 2023 during the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger.
