India’s Dairy Cooperative Sector

In September 2024, the Ministry of Cooperation has launched a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for ‘White Revolution 2.0’ to boost India's dairy cooperatives.

Key Objectives

  • Increase milk procurement by 50% in five years.
  • Target: 1,000 lakh kg/day by 2029.
  • Empower women farmers and enhance dairy infrastructure under NPDD 2.0.
  • Boost dairy exports via indigenous production of testing equipment & bulk milk collection.

Financial inclusion:

  • ‘Cooperation among Cooperatives’ initiative.
  • Interest-free cash credit via RuPay-KCC & micro-ATMs for dairy societies.

Historical Context: White Revolution & Operation Flood

  • Led by NDDB & Dr. Verghese Kurien (1970-1996).
  • Key Achievements:
    • Expanded milk production and developed dairy cooperatives.
