Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

A surge in HMPV cases in China raised global concern, but WHO has not declared it a health emergency. Approximately two or more cases have been found in India in January, 2025.

  • HMPV was discovered in 2001, part of the Pneumoviridae family
    • It Causes flu-like symptoms: cough, fever, runny nose
    • No vaccine or specific treatment
    • Spreads through droplets and contact
    • May cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis in severe cases
  • High-Risk Groups: Children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals
