High Seas Treaty: Cabinet Approves India’s Participation
The Union Cabinet in July 2024 approved India's participation in the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, also known as the High Seas Treaty, under UNCLOS.
Key Highlights
- Ministry in Charge: Ministry of Earth Sciences.
- High Seas Coverage: 64% of total ocean area, beyond 200 nautical miles from national coastlines.
- Status: Adopted in 2023, requires 60 ratifications to enter into force. As of June 2024:
- 91 countries signed.
- 8 countries ratified.
Key Focus Areas of BBNJ Agreement
- Marine Genetic Resources (MGRs) – Sustainable use & benefit-sharing.
- Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs) – Marine protected areas.
- Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) – Sustainable activities in high seas.
