Direct-to-Device (D2D) Satellite Connectivity
On November 13, 2024, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) announced the launch of India’s first Direct-to-Device (D2D) Satellite connectivity. This initiative has been launched in collaboration with the US-based communications company ViaSAT.
- Principle: Satellites act as cell towers in space, eliminating the need for ground-based towers.
- Signal Transmission: Signals are directly transmitted from satellites in orbit to devices on Earth.
- NTN Technology: Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) enables seamless two-way communication between devices and satellites.
- BSNL Implementation: The service utilizes ViaSAT’s Geostationary L-band satellites positioned 36,000 km above Earth to ensure reliable coverage in remote areas.
