The Union Government, in September 2024, launched ‘Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan’ to enhance the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.
Key Highlights
- Budget: Rs. 79,156 crore.
- Objective: Saturate critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, and livelihood through scheme convergence.
- Coverage: 63,000 villages across 30 States/UTs, benefiting over 5 crore tribals.
Tribal Demographics & Challenges
- Population: 8.6% of India’s total (2011 Census).
- Poverty: 40.6% live below the poverty line.
- Employment: Majority in primary sector (agriculture & forest-based livelihoods).
- Education: Literacy rate 72.1%, but low higher education attainment.
- Health:
- Triple Disease Burden: Malnutrition, infectious diseases, genetic disorders (e.g., sickle cell anaemia).
