Classical Language Status to Five More Indian Languages
The Union Cabinet on October 3, 2024 approved the conferral of Classical Language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali.
- A Classical Language is recognized for its historical antiquity, rich literary tradition, and independent linguistic heritage.
- Granting this status facilitates:
- Protection and promotion of linguistic heritage
- Academic research and scholarship
- Cultural pride and national identity
- The move seeks to:
- Elevate the status of these languages globally;
- Ensure intergenerational transmission of ancient literature and knowledge; and
- Promote the vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat through linguistic inclusiveness.
