Yogini Sculptures handed over to India

On 17th November, 2023, two 8th century yogini sculptures stolen from a temple in India were handed over to India’s External Affairs Minister in London (UK).

  • The two stone statues of Yogini Chamunda and Yogini Gomukhi, stolen from Lokhari temple in UP’s Banda district in 1970s.
  • Yogini Chamunda - one of the major Tantric deities - is a retinue of the warrior goddess Parvati. The name is derived from ‘Chanda’ and ‘Munda’, two ‘Asuras’ who were killed by Chamunda. She is closely associated with Goddess Kali.
  • Yogini Gomukhi is a Gaumukhi Yogini, one of the 64 goddesses for tantric rituals.
