Deletion of Kuki-Chins Tribe from ST List

The Central government has asked Manipur state government to examine a representation seeking deletion of the “Nomadic Chin-Kuki” from the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Manipur.

  • Amendments to the ST list are governed by legislation enacted by Parliament, with proposals originating from the respective State governments.
  • The Lokur Committee established in 1965, outlined criteria for designating communities as Scheduled Tribes, including primitive traits, distinctive culture, and geographical isolation.
