Natural vegetation refers to a plant community. It is of high significance as vegetation releases oxygen and sequesters carbon. Vegetation affects soil development over time, generally contributing to a more productive soil. It provides wildlife habitat and food. It also gives spiritual and cultural experiences to some people.

As per Forest Survey of India’s ‘State of Forest Report 2021’, very dense forests (canopy density over 70%) covers 3.04%, moderately dense forests (40-70%) covers 9.33% and open forests (10-40%) covers 9.34% of geographical area.
