Indian Antarctic Act, 2022

In August 2022, the Indian Antarctic Act, 2022 was notified. The Act aims at having India’s own national measures for protecting the Antarctic environment and also the dependent and associated ecosystem.

Key Provisions

  • Indian Antarctic Authority (IAA): The Act has provisions to set-up Indian Antarctic Authority (IAA) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The IAA shall be the apex decision-making authority and shall facilitate programmes and activities permitted under the Act.
  • Applicability: It will apply to any person, foreigners, corporations, firms, vessels or aircraft that is a part of an Indian expedition to Antarctica.
