Tropical cyclones originate and intensify over warm tropical oceans. North Indian Ocean region provides ideal conditions for the formation and intensification of cyclonic storms which are:

  • Large sea surface with temperature higher than 27° C
  • Weak vertical wind shear which allows the storm clouds to rise vertically to high level
  • Presence of Coriolis force
  • A pre-existing weak low-pressure area
