India has paid heavy human and economic cost because of hydro-meteorological calamities in the last four years. What are the reasons behind that? Suggest some mitigation and adaptation measures?

Answer: Hydro-meteorological disasters are those that occur due to the transfer of moisture and energy between the atmosphere and earth’s surface. E.g. Floods, droughts, cyclone, avalanche, cold wave, heat wave, etc. In the last three years (2019-2021) more than 6500 deaths have been attributed to hydro metrological calamities.

Reasons

According to Indian Metrological disasters, following reasons can be attributed to -

  • Global warming of 0.6 degree C in the past 100 years.
  • Increasing extreme climate events due to Climate Change.
  • Rise in intensity and frequency of cyclones due to rising oceanic temperature.
  • Erratic monsoon rainfall (both temporal and spatial) and delayed inflow ....
