Extreme heat waves are on the rise in Indian sub-continent and have significant socio-economic impact. Explain its cause and suggest some measures to adapt and mitigate.

Answer: A heat wave is a period of abnormally high temperatures whereby maximum temperature should be at least 40°C for Plains and at least 30°C for Hilly regions. There has been rise in extreme heat waves in Indian subcontinent.

Causes

  • Absence ofwestern disturbances over northwest India
  • Absence of periodic light rainfall and thundershowers.
  • Absence of any significant pre-monsoon activity such as local rainfall.
  • Presence of anti-cyclones which results in hot and dry weather.
  • Climate change increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves.

  • Heat waves have killed more than 17000 people ....
