Answer: Religious beliefs and social obscurantism entangled Indian society in the nineteenth century. Female infanticide, child marriage, polygamy, sati, and purdah system were among the most heinous societal evils faced by women. Caste prejudice was another detrimental element. Human dignity was undermined by humiliations such as untouchability.
