Despite strong government initiatives to eradicate manual scavenging in India, there is still report of manual scavenging in some isolated places. Explain the reasons and suggest some measures.

Answer: Manual scavenging is the practice of removing human excreta by hand from sewers or septic tanks. As per survey of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment there are nearly 58,098 manual scavengers. However the unofficial figures are much higher.

The government has taken several measures to eradicate manual scavenging such as Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 (PEMSR), Self-Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS), Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge, Swachhta Udyami Yojana, etc.
