Answer: Forest is a significant rural industry and important environmental resource. Forest not only provides important ecosystem services but also livelihood to forest dwellers.

  • Though, total forest cover stands at 24.56% of the total geographical area of India, forest cover in hilly district and tribal districts stands at 40.30% and 37.54% respectively which is more than 33% as required under National Forest Policy.
