Religious System of Later Vedic Period
- Major Gods: Indra and Agni, the two notable gods, lost their earlier significance. However, in the later Vedic period, Prajapati (The Creator) rose to become the supreme being. Rudra (the god of animals) and Vishnu, two of the Rigvedic period's other minor deities, also rose to prominence (the preserver and protector of people).
- God of Sudras: Some social classes had their own gods; the god of the Sudras was Pushan, who was in charge of watching over the livestock. The later Vedic era also shows evidence of idolatry.
