Development of Press

Ancient India did not have any press or associated profession. It was only during medieval India that press developed.

  • Press was under a lot of regulation and restrictions under British. Initially (mid-19th century), the press was used as a medium to propagate ideas on social reforms but with growing nationalism, it was used as a tool to fight British and create awareness amongst Indian masses.

Major Restrictions Imposed by the British includes –

  • Censorship of Press Act (1799): Anticipating French invasion in India, Lord Wellesley imposed wartime restrictions including pre-censorship.
