  • In 1923, the Congress decided to take active steps towards the eradication of untouchability.
  • The basic strategy it adopted was to educate and mobilize opinion among caste Hindus on the question.
  • Struggle against untouchability was being waged since the end of 19th century by several reformers and intellectuals such as Sri Narayan Guru, N. Kumaran Asan and T.K. Madhavan.
  • A beginning was made in Vaikom, a village in Travancore. On 30th March, 1924, the Satyagrahis, led by K.P. Kesava Menon, marched from the Satyagraha camp towards the temple.
