Rise of British Empire in India

  • Decline of Mughals: The decline was complemented by decentralization of Mughal Empire. With the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, Hyderabad, Bengal and Awadh declared them as independent.
  • Initially, British EIC arrived for finished goods. Trading centers were established at ports called as Factories. First such factory in North was at Surat and in South was at Masulipatnam.

British Occupation of Bengal

  • Farukhshiyar’s Farman, 1717: Mughal emperor issued a Farman often called as Magna Carta of EIC which provided custom duty free trade from Bengal.
