Congress Split at Surat (1907)

  • Reasons for the Split
    • Approach of Moderates: Moderates could not keep pace with turn of events and failed to meet demands of new stage of national movement. Visible proof of this was failure to attract the younger generation.
    • Disagreements between Moderates and Extremists: Unlike Moderates, the Extremists wanted to extend the Swadeshi and Boycott Movement from Bengal to the rest of the country and to gradually extend the boycott from foreign goods to every form of association or cooperation with the colonial Government.
    • Congress Session, 1906, Calcutta: Another conflict arose while choosing President for the session. Extremists wanted either Tilak or Lajpat ....
