Answer: Vallinayagam Olaganathan Chidambaram (V.O.C) Pillai, an Indian Tamil freedom fighter and politician, was born on 5th September 1872. He was popularly known as Kappalottiya Tamizhan (The Tamil Helmsman).

Contributions of V.O.C. Pillai

  • Swadeshi movement gathered momentum in Tirunelveli district after his arrival at Tuticorin.
  • Founded an indigenous Indian shipping service -Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company- in 1906.
  • On 27 February 1908, VOC, along with his friends led a strike in the British owned Coral Mills at Tuticorin to protest against the harsh working conditions of its employees.
  • V.O.C. was also an erudite scholar:
