Biological Diversity Act 2002

  • In 2002, India enacted a landmark law, the Biological Diversity Act, to focus on conservation of biological diversity and ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilisation of biological resources and associated knowledge.
  • The Act was enacted to meet the obligations under Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to which India is a party.
  • Further, itprovides for establishment of statutory bodies such as National Biodiversity Authority, State Biodiversity Boards, National and State Biodiversity Funds, Biodiversity Management Committee etc.
