​Challenges Associated with India’s Eco-sensitive Zones

Eco-sensitive Zones (ESZs) in India are designated areas surrounding protected areas like national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. These zones act as buffers to minimize negative impacts on the core protected areas. Despite their importance, ESZs face numerous challenges that hinder their effective management and conservation.

Key Challenges

  • Encroachment and Unplanned Development: Rapid urbanization and industrialization lead to encroachment on ESZs. Unplanned infrastructure projects, such as roads and buildings, fragment habitats and disrupt wildlife corridors.
