Need
- Decline in productive capacity of the land either temporary or permanent. It has been estimated that land degradation in India will cost 2.5 per cent of India’s agricultural output. Also, India suffers an annual production loss of 13 million tons due to degradation which amounts to a loss of rupee 205 billion.
- Loss of Biodiversity: Land degradation leads to loss of biodiversity, affecting the ecosystem balance and eventually disturbs the ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycle, water, and energy regulation. It also leads to the extinction of many species important in aspects of agriculture and wildlife.
