Answer: Ocean Acidification refers reduction in the pH of the ocean over an extended period of time, caused primarily by uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

Causes for Ocean Acidification

  • High intake of CO2: ocean absorbs about 30% of CO2 that is released in the atmosphere. As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase, so do the levels in the ocean.
  • Massive burning of fossil fuels.
  • Decrease in carbonate ion.

Impacts on Coastal Ecosystem

  • Rapid bleaching of coral reefs and polyps.
  • Food web interference: as acidification will leads to death and disappearance of some marine plants and animals.
